Resources Case Studies World-Renowned Fashion Designer and Retailer Turns to Citrix® and TheAdmins for Infrastructure Redesign Advice and Implementation In March of 2007, one of the largest fashion designer/retailers in the United States – with 1,500 stores worldwide – came to the realization that its existing infrastructure was in need of an upgrade. With the company’s existing operating systems leading to numerous stability issues, and its servers about to lose customer service support and lacking in critical features to provide for a more reliable and easier-to-manage environment, the time had come for the company to wipe the slate lean and rebuild a stable foundation to use as a framework moving forward. Fareportal Travel Site Takes off, with Help from TheAdmins and Citrix® NetScaler® “Shortly after I started working here we had a celebration,” explains Fareportal project leader Ahmet Sevket Seyalioglu as he shakes his head in disbelief. “We were so happy because we had our first day with 50 bookings!” Way back then… in online business terms that means just over a year ago… Fareportal handled those 50 bookings on a single server. Today, Ahmet can’t imagine being happy about booking only 50 flights in a day, and he can’t imagine running the company off a single server. While that rapid growth has been great from a business point of view, it has also presented serious challenges to the Fareportal IT department. Since its inception, Fareportal (www.fareportal.com) has followed the growth pattern of a story book successful online company. Plot its growth on a graph and the line goes almost straight up. When Ahmet joined the company, however, he was quickly faced with difficult problems directly caused by that strong growth. Server capacity rapidly reached an unstable saturation point as bookings traffic increased. Clearly, short term and long term server and network issues had to be addressed. As a busy physician, however, the time you have to spend with each patient is measured in minutes. Since all patient records are online at your hospital, when you walk in the patient’s room the first thing you do is sign onto the computer system. Signing on requires executing three different passwords for the various records you need to check. Even if you remember your passwords, simply accessing the information means you’re paying attention to a computer terminal rather than making eye contact with the patient and engaging him or her in conversation. Your already limited patient time has been cut by the network sign on process. You’re frustrated. The patient is frustrated. Now imagine going through the routine 15 more times for 15 more patients as you complete your rounds. Then think about doing it twice a day, every day. That’s why Karen Fischback, Manager of Infrastructure Support at Solaris Health Systems, had an unhappy bunch of physicians on her hands. Physicians with limited time for patient contact were frustrated as they moved from patient to patient and from unit to unit. The challenge of balancing easy access and tight security is critical for medical records. Continue reading the Solaris case study...
